Starting Out
Materials
As we discussed in class today there are some materials listed below that are going to be almost essential to you being successful in my class. Others you are going to want at some point, others are just extremely nice to have and simply make things easier or more organized and efficient.
Going back over what we talked about......
Essential = SKETCHBOOK.
You are going to want = Drawing pencils and illustration pens(sharpies, ultra fine, fine, or Sharpie pen.
Nice to have = Portfolio, kneaded eraser(remember in the store it will look like a square).
Another thing that you may want is a can of the cheapest hair spray you can find(airisol is best but whatever will work) at the dollar store and it will work extremely well. Works extremely well for what you ask? A workable fixative, a can of workable fixative from pretty much any art supply store is going to cost you between $8.00 - $13.00. That compared to like $1-3.00......you do the math!

Art Fee
Unfortunately due to budget restrictions we also have to charge a small art fee. This can be paid in two different ways. The first and easiest way is to pay through the school website, the second is to pay in person. If paying with a check simply make it payable to Independence High School. The fee is 5.00 and will go directly to YOUR CLASSES for general supplies such as paper, colored pencils, water color, brushes, etc, etc.
Here is the link to the Online payment http://osp.osmsinc.com/CMS/BVModules/CategoryTemplates/Detailed%20List%20with%20Properties/Category.aspx?categoryid=AZ416
The other option if paying online is not going to work for you is that you can pay in person. If that is the case then please either give cash or checks(made out to Independence high school) to Mrs. Rollins in room 201. She will give you a recite as your proof of payment, which you will then need to make sure that I see and mark your name off the financial obligations sheet in the room.

Optional Materials you may want
PortfoliosThe first project that we work on will be a makeshift portfolio. However what we make is only going to help you keep your work organized on your shelf and is not meant to be used to transport your work to and from. You will have space to store your work in the classroom but if you may want to invest in a portfolio. The majority of work we will do will be around 12"x 18" so if you pick one up make sure that you keep that size in mind. These like everything else vary greatly in both design, functionality, and of course price. The ones in the image above average between 8-13 dollars. In my opinion its a very good investment.

CharcoalWe will be working with charcoal at some point. There are a lot of different options here. There are charcoal pencils, compressed charcoal, and what is called vine charcoal. There is also white charcoal as shown in the image. In class vine charcoal will be available, however compressed charcoal and charcoal pencils will not be available due to budgetary constraints. All charcoal projects can be completed with the vine charcoal however it provides a very limited range of value. The compressed sticks, as well as the charcoal pencils not only increase the available range of value but also decrease the difficulty of the project.
